What's New at Trost Poultry?

1/1/07 - Happy New Year! Today marked the start of egg collection for a setting to be made around January 12th, aiming for a February 1st hatch. The weather is very unseasonably warm here, it is 1:30 pm and it is 41 degrees. In an average year the high would be about 15. With this warm weather the birds are laying great! Now hopefully it will hold out until the first setting is made. Yesterday I collected a dozen eggs from 16 laying hens. My final breeding hens are 3 White Lamona bantams, 3 White Faced Black Spanish bantams, and 2 Peach Laced Lamona bantams.

12/25/06 - WOW - Where do I start? Some people have been watching the site change and grow over the last few months and are aware of the changes that my flock has gone through. If you would have asked me last fall how many Lamona's I would be breeding the answer would have been, "As many as I can!" With the arrival of fall that number fell to 15, and earlier this month it went down to 4 for the January setting and then 7 for the March setting. Over the last few years I have hatched thousands of chicks, however that will also change this spring. My goal is to hatch between 50 & 70 and to hopefully stay on the lower side of that range. Hopefully the reduced numbers will help me work on getting more uniformity breeding in the birds. Until next time, have a great holiday week!
